Planet-friendly Web Design
Every time you load a webpage or receive an email, no matter the device, you emit CO2. Fortunately, there are techniques to minimise these emissions, and I’m committed to incorporating them into the way I build websites by following best practices and sustainable guidelines.
In 2022, I became “Certified Carbon Literate” through The Carbon Literacy Project via The Open University. Being carbon literate means understanding how everyday activities impact the climate, knowing practical steps to reduce emissions at an individual, community, or organisational level, and appreciating why these actions matter.
To promote transparency, I include the Web Carbon Badge on most of the websites I build. This tool automatically calculates and displays the carbon emissions of each page, encouraging accountability and awareness.
I am part of The Sustainable Developer Directory, a global network of developers, freelancers, and agencies dedicated to creating low-carbon web solutions and I joined a global movement of creative professionals saying no to fossil fuels clients, called Clean Creatives. For hosting, I choose providers powered by green energy, verified by the Green Web Foundation.
Additionally, I follow and emphasize the importance of the Web Sustainability Guidelines, a set of recommendations from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Sustainable Web Design community group, designed to help developers create more eco-friendly digital products and services.
Sustainability is an ongoing journey. I regularly read, learn, and explore new ways to reduce the environmental impact of digital projects, improving day by day.
